Anglesea Community Garden and Welcome to Country
Saturday dawned a cool and pleasant day, perfect for a midday gathering at the Anglesea Community Garden.
Many good, committed, local people have had a hand in bringing this vision and idea into reality.
Launched with a 'Welcome to Country' smoking ceremony with local Wathaurong elder, Dave Tournier from the Wathaurong Co-operative in Geelong - this event was my first 'Welcome to Country' since my arrival back from NZ to live permanently in Anglesea.
For me, in many ways, it's been like finally returning home - to a place my family has known and lived in for many generations.
Spaces like this are necessary, for binding people together, to give us all a place to literally and metaphorically put our roots down - to rest, renew and nurture our spirits. We live in an ever-increasingly fast paced world - one that often forgets that rest and renewal are the antidote to speed and progress. Finding balance, groundedness, seeing the fruits of your labour grow; building local resilience; tuning into the seasons and cycles of nature, understanding how to 'close the loop' and live more sustainably.
Coming here to reconnect with Country & with each other is what these community spaces are about - sharing knowledge, teaching and learning, feeling safe enough to give the best of ourselves... a heart-felt thank you to all those who have invested the time and effort to make this a vibrant place to connect.
A quick plug for the next event - Pizza in the Park, Saturday 19th Feb, 2011 - 7-9.30pm - pecha kucha style presentations, wood fire pizzas, live music - I know where I'll be... hope to see you there
